City welcomes UWC champions home from CAF Women’s Champions League

The City of Cape Town extends its heartfelt congratulations to the University of the Western Cape (UWC) Women's Soccer Team for making history! UWC has become the first-ever university team to qualify for the CAF Women’s Champions League, joining defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies. This marks the first time two South African teams will compete for Africa's most prestigious club trophy. Today, 27 August 2024, the City’s Deputy Mayor, Eddie Andrews welcomed the winning team at the Cape Town International Airport. This Cape Town team showcased their incredible talent and determination in the final of the CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA Qualifiers, triumphing over Gaborone United 9-8 on penalties after a hard-fought regular time draw in Blantyre, Malawi. ‘I was saddened by the news of the recent passing of the late Rector & Chancellor and sportsman Professor Brian O'Connell who played a significant role in transforming the higher education sector in South Africa. I know this prestigious victory would have made him immensely proud as he believed in the sporting talent which resides at UWC,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
